Mrs. Gertie Evelyn Sheffield Buchanan, 93, of Mayo, FL, went home to be with her Lord Friday June 29, 2018 at Lafayette Health Care in Mayo. Mrs. Buchanan was born February 22, 1925 in Lafayette County, FL to Frank and Kate Sheffield. She was of the Baptist Faith and a member of Midway Baptist Church. She was a homemaker who owned and operated the family farm along with her husband "Preacher" Buchanan. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who leaves a legacy of faith, hard work, and service to others. In her spare time she enjoyed cooking for her family and neighbors, fishing, and working in her yard. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Kate Sheffield; her husband, Alvin Foye "Preacher" Buchanan, a daughter Reba Hemphill, and 2 grandchildren, Daniel Folsom, and Kenneth Buchanan.
She is survived by; a son, Alvin Buchanan, and wife Gaile, of Old Town, FL; 5 daughters, Barbara Jacobs, Lana Morgan O'Steen, and Husband Larry, all of Mayo, Julia Roos, of Roswell, NM, Darlene Ward, and husband Leonard, of Tallahassee, FL, and Carol Edmonds, and husband Dwight, of Live Oak; 19 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Buchanan will be held at 11:00AM on Monday July 2, 2018 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Bro. Steven Ruff and Bro. Bruce Branche officiating. The family will receive friends starting at 9:30AM prior to the service. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. All arrangements are under the care of Burns Funeral Home of Mayo.
