Lewis McDonald Hurst passed away on Dec. 28, 2016 at home in Mayo, FL.
Donald was born in Mayo on Oct. 1, 1930 to John and Lula Mae Hurst. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Evie, Varney, Thelma and brother Tom. Of his immediate family, he is survived by sisters, Eula and Jeanette (Mike) and brother Martin.
In February of 1986, Donald transitioned from bachelor to instant family man when he married Lyndal Jones Wilder. He was a devoted husband to Lyndal and a wonderful stepfather to Ricky (Vicky), Randy and Cathy (Fred).
He had seven grandchildren. He was instantly dubbed "Papa D" by the Atlanta grandkids, Michael, Kristy, Rachel and Phillip. Many summers were spent showing them the ropes in the chicken houses. Here in Mayo, he was a good friend to Robby and Randy. To Ben, he was Papa and they were best buddies. He had many nieces and nephews, great grands and friends.
Donald was a quiet, slow-moving man who worked hard and was very particular in his work. He enjoyed fishing at the Mill Pond and later built his own catfish hole at home. Donald served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He belonged to the Mayo Masonic Lodge and worked locally as a substitute mail carrier but his main life's work was the farm where he grew hay and raised broilers. After selling the farm and moving to town, he enjoyed woodworking.
Graveside services were held on Friday, Dec. 30, 2016 at 3 p.m. at Airline Cemetery with Bro. Fred Andrews and Bro. Randy Waters officiating with interment immediately following.
All arrangements are under the direction of Burns Funeral Home of Mayo.
