Mr. Richard Charles Byrd, 82, passed away on August 25, 2017 at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, FL, following a brief illness. Richard was born November 10, 1934 in Mayo, Florida to Mr. Gordon Byrd and Mrs. Daisy Land Byrd. He was of the Baptist Purity faith and was a member of the Baptist Purity Church. Richard's father, Gordon Byrd, who owned a timber company and sawmill, donated the lumber for the Macedonia Baptist Purity Church near Branford. He worked with his father in his early years, then as a young man he went to work for the Fruit Growers Express Railroad as a bookkeeper and payroll supervisor. Richard was a lifelong businessman and entrepreneur who owned and operated multiple businesses in Lafayette and Taylor Counties, including Byrd's Recreation Center, Byrd's 76 Filling Station, the Lafayette Movie Theater, and the Tiny Diner. He was an accomplished piano player and in his spare time played for his church and for countless events throughout the area. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Gordon and Daisy Byrd, and a son, Richard "Ricky" Byrd Jr.
He is survived by; 1 son, Bart A. Byrd, of Mayo; 2 daughters, Sonia Byrd Garden, and husband, Robert, and Lisa Byrd, all of Mayo; 2 sisters, Nedra Warren, of Jacksonville, and "Ginner" Dale King, of Fernandina Beach, FL; 2 grandsons, Andrew and Dalton; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Burns Funeral Home of Mayo with Bro. Bobby Hires, Bro. Richard Joyner, and Bro. Larry Kerley officiating. Interment will follow in Macedonia Baptist Purity Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service starting at 1:00PM also at Burns Funeral Home of Mayo. All arrangements are under the care of Burns Funeral Home of Mayo.
