Wyatt's Story

Wyatt R. Thomas, 87, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2016 in Gainesville, FL. Wyatt was born July 20, 1929 in Mayo, Florida to Gary Luther Thomas and Annie Ruth Ezell Thomas.
Wyatt honorably served our country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict for four years. Mr. Thomas was of the Christian faith and was an active member of the Mayo Church of Christ. Wyatt worked as a Program Specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 34 years retiring in 1987. After retiring Mr. Thomas began to raise cattle on the family farm. Wyatt enjoyed playing golf, he was an avid Florida Gator fan and he loved to travel.
Wyatt was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers James L. Thomas and Gary Luther Thomas, Jr. and sisters Kathleen Brannon and Betty Frier.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 66 years Mrs. Vermell Thomas; his daughters, Luana Thomas Elrod and Nancy Thomas Zion (Randal); his grandchildren Lacy Elrod Wright (Justin), Burton Elrod, III (Rebecca), Matthew Wyatt Elrod, Morgan Dirube, Evan Thomas Dirube and Emma Zion; great-grandchildren, Gray Wright and Noble Wright; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016 at Burns Funeral Home of Mayo with Bro. Norman Thomas officiating. Interment services will follow immediately afterwards in Day Cemetery. The family received friends on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016 at Burns Funeral Home of Mayo.
